We understand that choosing a career path can be a daunting task. That’s why HCA New England Healthcare – Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Parkland Medical Center in Derry, and Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester – helps students learn about opportunities in the healthcare industry. While students do not provide direct-patient care in these programs, there are opportunities for them to intern and volunteer in both clinical and non-clinical areas of our hospitals.
Extended Learning Opportunities Program
Students gain exposure in a healthcare setting by assisting with tasks in a department of interest such as the ER, maternity care, intensive care, imaging, facilities, security, and many others. Student tasks can range from answering phones or stocking crash carts to assisting nursing staff, and much more. The program also consists of professional development opportunities including guest speakers, team building, and workshops.
This unpaid internship for high school students is for a full semester. Students may earn academic credit, depending on the school.

Summer Healthcare Exploration Program
The summer Healthcare Exploration Program is designed for students who are interested in healthcare, but who are unsure which path to take. Each day will be a unique experience shadowing different healthcare professions to get a glimpse into the various career paths available. Students will work closely with hospital leaders on a project throughout the summer and deliver a final presentation to hospital administration and staff on the last day of their internship. The program includes weekly professional development workshops during which students will hear from healthcare professionals on their own career paths, as well as various development activities to strengthen their portfolio.
This is a paid, seven-week rotational internship for high school and college students.

Volunteer Program
Students may become hospital volunteers which provide them with opportunities to be exposed to different areas of healthcare. Joining our volunteer program is a unique opportunity for students to enrich their lives while helping others.
